Personal God

It is a great blessing to know that insignificant humans can have a personal relationship with the God of the Universe. When thinking of the forces of nature and its irresistible power, the song poet expressed God greatness with the question, "How Great Thou Art." Yet this same God is not too great or too busy to have a personal relationship with his people. The idea of the personal God is found in John 4:23 where the inspired writer writes, "But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him."

When a person seeks a relationship with God, it is an attempt to establish a direct link between God and the seeker. God is not too busy or important to establish this link with the seeker. The seeker is not looking to become one of many. He wants a relationship with God in which he knows that when he needs to talk to God, he has God’s ear. The seeker wants to know that God sees his distress and is concern. He wants to know that God is a present help in a time of need. What a blessed assurance that God is seeking for true worshippers who will worship him in spirit and in truth. How can a connection be missed when the true worshipper is seeking God and God is seeking him?

The concept of the personal God is illustrated in the testimony of Paul who told Timothy "Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his." Then there is the Psalmist that testified, "In my distress I cried unto the LORD, and he heard me." Stephen realized the importance of a personal God as he faced death at the hands of his rebellious murderers when he testified, "and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God." This passage in Acts 7:55-60 shows the concern of God and his Son over the distress of one of his obedient servants by indicating that Christ was not sitting on the right hand of God but standing there.

God is a God that wants to be worshipped. His reward for the true worshipper that seeks him is to establish a personal relationship with that worshipper second to none. This is the greatness of our God.
