House Divided

. . . .Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand:  Matthew 12: 25b

The above are the words of Jesus when answering to charges that he worked under the influence of Satan.  These words come to mind when I think of the political landscape of America.  Why I think of these words is because those of us who are Bible students know that the accusations made against Jesus were not valid.  This passage drives home the fact of how easy it is to make charges against an individual without having necessary proof to establish the factuality of the charges.

Our current political climate is one in which those that make our laws are dividing the ones being governed against themselves.  As Americans, we no longer think of ourselves as Americans.  Instead, we belong to a particular state, we are conservatives, we are Liberals, we are Democrats, or we are Republicans.  The list goes on.  As we turn into all of these different fractions, we are taught that anyone outside of our faction is the worse type of person with the worse values possible.  The spirit of brotherhood that allows for a difference in opinion has virtually ceased to exist.  If one sits on the sidelines and observes the mud that is being slung back and forward, it is amazing how blind people become in their various factions.  The divisions are so pronounced and so deep, it is not necessary to describe in detail the hatred that the different factions have for each other.  The hatred has been reduced to code words that explain everything one needs to know about a person. This has made keeping division among people easy.

As the common people in this country are set against each other by those that make our laws and the people who are paid an extremely huge amount of money to keep the minds of the faithful poisoned against those with a different view point, our country is not able to solve the problems facing it.  Neither are we able to have an honest discussion about the real problems facing this country and how to solve them.  We are too deeply divided.

There has been a false hope that the salvation of the country is in voting one political party in all branches of the government.  We see how well that worked at the Federal level when the congress and the White House were in the majority.  The minority worked very effectively to prevent the majority from having its way in most of the legislation that was passed.  At the state level, we have seen how a majority in the legislature and the Governor’s mansion passed laws that created huge civil unrest and protests.  The results have been successful recall elections or the overturning of passed laws by popular vote.  I do not believe it is necessary to discuss the rise of the Tea Party and what brought it about.  The solution to the division is not making sure our favorite party controls all levels of government.  This is especially true when the ruling party makes it its business to punish those who did not support it.

Those of us who believe the Bible is the Word of God cannot ignore the teachings of Jesus Christ.  Jesus is clear in his teaching.  If continue on the course on which we are traveling as a country, we will fall.  A divided house cannot stand.
